You will see large, non native, Rocky Mountain Elk throughout the Park. They were introduced to northern Arizona, from Yellowstone National Park, around 1913.  They reached the South Rim of Grand Canyon in the 1970s. Merriam's Elk were the native sub-species that lived in the area until they were hunted to extinction in the early twentieth century.

Please do not approach wildlife.
