The Rocky Mountain Elk, found at Grand Canyon National Park, are not native to the area. Merriams's Elk, a native sub-species, were hunted to extinction in the early 20th century. Rocky Mountain Elk were transplanted in northern Arizona and made their way to the South Rim in the 1970's. They are Herbivores and eat grass, shrubs, leaves and bark. Male Elk are called Bulls and have solid antlers made of bone that can grow more than an inch per day.
