Around 65 million years ago a huge area of land was uplifted, due to the earths shifting, forming the Colorado Plateau.

Just 5 -6 million years ago, the Colorado River began to carve its way downward through these rock layers. The river and its tributaries, together with the erosive forces of rain, snow, heat and cold, have formed the spectacular Grand Canyon, one mile deep and at some points 18 miles across. Today the river continues to carve into the earth’s surface.
